Achieving High-Performing Salesforce DevOps with Metrics

Written by Admin | Apr 24, 2023 3:21:23 PM

To be an elite Salesforce DevOps team, alignment around software delivery metrics is essential. Organizations are increasingly asking development teams to produce metrics that demonstrate DevOps performance and connect with business objectives. While some teams are rising to the occasion, others aren’t sure how to get started or are stuck with manual processes that don’t deliver.

What sets high performers apart from low performers, and how can organizations achieve high-performing Salesforce DevOps with meaningful metrics? What DevOps metrics should Salesforce teams be utilizing, and what tools can help them measure and improve software delivery processes? We recently convened a few Salesforce experts – Gaurav Kheterpal, Salesforce MVP and founder and CEO of Vanshiv Technologies; Andrew Cook, technical Salesforce instructor at Salesforce Ben; and Veroljub Mihajlovic, senior product marketing leader at Flosum – to discuss these questions and more in our webinar Achieving High-Performing Salesforce DevOps with Metrics. Here are a few takeaways from their conversation.

The case for software delivery intelligence in DevOps

Metrics are much more than just a box to check; true software delivery intelligence enables business leaders and other stakeholders to get a complete view into what is working well and where attention is needed throughout the entire development process. Software delivery intelligence helps businesses meet several key objectives, including mapping software delivery flow, creating a baseline, capturing process and delivery metrics, and linking application development efforts with business value. Businesses who treat the insights gleaned from software delivery intelligence as their DevOps North Star can enact meaningful change in delivery, security, cost, management, autonomy, and innovation.

Becoming an elite DevOps performer

A useful tool for organizations seeking to become metrics-centric is Google’s annual Accelerate State of DevOps survey, commonly referred to as DORA metrics. This survey provides data-driven industry insights that examine the capabilities and practices driving software delivery as well as operational and organizational performance, evaluating components such as lead time to change, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and mean time to restore. Using these metrics, DORA segments development teams into Elite, High, Medium and Low-Performing categories. According to this year’s research, Elite teams are twice as likely to meet or exceed their organizational performance goals, giving teams tangible metrics to work towards as they seek to improve their effectiveness.

Implementing Salesforce software delivery intelligence

There are many tools available that can help organizations accelerate their Salesforce DevOps velocity while becoming more metric-driven. Deciding which DevOps platform to utilize depends on the organization’s specific use case and how simple or complex of a solution they require. Our Salesforce experts evaluated three common options – Salesforce DevOps Center, open source and Flosum – to see which one checked the most boxes for organizations who are ready to be driven by performance metrics.

The importance of DevOps performance

Understanding software delivery performance and acting on the opportunities for improvement has many benefits for organizations. Flosum – the fastest, more secure platform built for Salesforce development – ranks high on all four DORA metrics and helps our customers outperform their competitors. In fact, Flosum customers are 1.2x more likely to be a high-performance DevOps organization.
